Lions Golf Making History, Heading to State

Magen Dow, Reporter

The regional tournament for PHS was quite a special one. The lion’s golf team was able to make history as the first PHS team to head to state! Coach Dean describes how the regional tournament went for the Ponder boys golf team:

“After being down (14 from Qualifying) from Day 1 and surrounded by teams fighting for a spot or two to go to State… Luckily that somebody was our Ponder Lions… That final hour as those groups creeped in, and as each group finished they brought news of ‘It was going to be close;… but that moment had to be put on pause as Tyler Akins had tied for the individual gold and would need to play it off… It would be Sudden Death play off to determine who would win the gold… Both boys would manage tap in birdies and require another hole to determine the winner. Now on hole 2… It took a birdie-birdie playoff to beat Tyler. What might have been a little bigger sweet for him, will be short lived as his teammates… were there to congratulate him. Despite his playoff loss, Tyler mounted 2 fantastic rounds… to help lead the way for our team to punch a ticket to State!” Great job lions golf!

Unfortunately, the Lady Lions golf team did not qualify for the state tournament but they still played exceptionally well. Head golf coach Hunter Dean recaps the 36 holes for our lady lions:

“There were a lot of ups, sadly some downs, and somewhere in between… The girls were projected differently heading into Regionals… in a very tough Region… We didn’t have our best day… Thankfully, as a whole bounced back for Day 2… Looking back we had girls with a lot of little victories throughout the 2 days. Magen finished her year shooting her second best score… of her career. Be sure to keep an eye on her as this will be a norm as she continues to play. Eleanor came thru with a lot of power… parring 3 of the hardest holes… Emily conquered her least favorite hole… something she was determined to do. Jordyn has really made some strides… Ava was perhaps the most level headed the whole trip and most brave… Arancha was the best manager we could’ve had. Although, it wasn’t our best outing, it… was a great trip for the many memories we made… Sadly this was the conclusion of the girls season, but certainly won’t be the last you here from them in the future.”
