Lions Dominate Cardinals

Cherokee Farmer, Reporter

Last night the JV White Lions traveled to Irving to take on the MacArthur Cardinals. The Lions gave up 4 runs in the 1st inning due to errors, but settled into the game quickly after that. With strong pitching from Clayton Cooper, who threw 80 total pitches in 7 innings, and great fielding in the infield from Bryson Smith, Mason McShan, Trenton Carroll and Nolan Durrett, who stepped up in a big way playing in a new position at first base. The outfield combination of Cooper Swink, Colby Murphey, and Scott Craven was phenomenal all night with each player catching at least one fly ball. Oscar Torres and Carson Williams provided great relief in the outfield with Torres making a great play that resulted in catcher Micah Gifford getting a tag out at home play, his second of the night.

The Lions got the bats going in a big way last night as well. Clayton Cooper and Cooper Swink were able to score runs in the 3rd and 5th innings respectively, but this still left the Lions down 2-5 at the top of the 7th innings and that is when the Lions went wild at the plate. Smith led off being a smart batter getting walked allowing Durrett to get to the plate on the second pitch that he saw Durrett blasted it to the right field fence for an inside the park home run that scored himself and Smith. Now only down by one run Clayton Cooper came up to bat and on the first pitch he saw he followed Durrett’s lead and sent a shot to the right field fence for another inside the park home run that tied the game. The next 2 batters for the Lions were McShan and Murphey who each had good hits into the outfield, but were met by great plays by Cardinal defenders. Carroll and Swink were the next batter for the Lions and both found a way to get on base. All this led to Micah Gifford stepping up to the plate for the Lions. Gifford did a great job battling the Cardinal’s pitcher until he got the pitch that he wanted. He sent it soaring into a gap between center and right field for a triple that scored Carroll and Swink!

Now with a 7-5 lead on the Cardinals the Lions took the field one last time looking to secure the win. Cooper faced 3 batters and got 3 outs to finish the game and get the win.
