The Ponder Lions lost a close one to the Boyd Yellowjackets on Friday, October 8th.  The game started off slow with neither team scoring and defensive battle raging on.  But in the second quarter, the Lions came roaring out in true “king of the jungle” style ready to hunt down some Yellowjackets and did just that scoring  three touchdowns with a Clifton Cooper pass to Case Peacock, a run by Zane Cassidy, and Cooper running it in himself.  Boyd managed to score once during the first half, and it appeared the Lions were off and running at the half with a score of 21 to 7.   However, Boyd wasn’t finished and came out with renewed energy in the third quarter managing to tie the score up at 21 all at the end of the third quarter.  Going into the final quarter it was tie game with a plenty of time for either team to pull out a win.  It was another defensive battle, but in the end, the Yellowjackets were able to pull out the victory scoring the game winning touchdown on a 7 yard run.  It was a heartbreaking loss, but a great effort by all the Lion players.  Now on to the Brock Eagles at home next week.

The JV Lions also took on the JV Yellowjackets on Thursday, October 7th at home.  Coach Threadgill had this to say about the game:

JV football played Boyd this Thursday night. Ponder lost 36-26 in a close game. Boyd jumped out front to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. We scored at the beginning of the 2nd quarter with a long pass from Cooper Reynolds to Dakota Cherrier. Boyd scores again on the next drive to make the score 22-8. We scored on the next drive to make the score 22-14 at the end of the first half. Ponder tries to onside the ball to open the half and Boyd recovers. The defense stops Boyd and we regain the ball. We are stopped on offense and Boyd scores, stretching the lead to 30-14. We get pinned on the 1 yard line and Justin John runs up the middle for a 99 yard touchdown to make the score 30-20. We get a stop and push the ball into the red zone and turn it over. Boyd scores again. 36-20. We scored on the next drive half way through the 4th quarter to make the game 30-26. Boyd scores at the end of the 4th to make the score 36-26. The boys played really well all night. Players of the game are Dakota Cherrier, Justin John, and Cooper Reynolds on offense and Collin Ussery, Andres Jimenez, and Brayden Annis on defense.

The Freshman football team played the Krum freshman team and Coach Westbrook commented below:

The Ponder Lions freshmen football team traveled to Krum on
Thursday, October 7th to take on the Krum Bobcats. The 1st
quarter was back and forth with multiple 4th down stops for both
defenses. In the 2nd quarter, the Bobcat offense came alive with
some big plays and went into halftime with a 14-0 lead. After
making some adjustments at halftime the Lions came out in the
second half and played well on both sides of the ball.
Unfortunately, in the end, the Bobcats were too much to handle
with the Lions losing 0-22. The Lions were led on both sides of
the ball by Clayton Cooper, Jimmy Camacho, Steven Pile, and
Blaine Turner. The Lions are now 3-3 on the season and will
look to add their fourth victory to the record board when they
travel to Brock on Thursday, October 14th .
