The Ponder Lions streak came to an end last Friday night with a heartbreaking loss to the Whitesboro Bearcats.  The Lions put up a hard fight, but fell short in the 34-18 loss.  The Lions had 1 touchdown in the first half with a pass from Clifton Cooper to Case Peacock. In the second quarter,  the Lions put up 2 more touchdowns by Zane Cassidy. Coach McBeth stated,  “It was a great effort by the Lions on both sides of the ball as they suffer their first loss of the season.  Case Peacock and Graham Whitewood had big games for the offense with Case having 129 yards receiving and Graham with 133.  Clifton Cooper also had a big night as he went 33-44 with 360 yards.  Mason Hodges had a good game defensively with some big plays that led to stops for the defense. The Lions are 3-1 on the season”.

The JV also put up a great fight against Whitesboro, but came up short against a good team.

Coach Threadgill’s comments on the game:

We received the kickoff and drove down the field, but got stopped right inside the redzone. Whitesboro scored on the ensuing drive, making the score 8-0. Whitesboro scored again to make it 16-0. After a long drive we scored to make the game 16-6 and then scored again to make it 16-14 before halftime. Whitesboro scores after halftime, making the score 24-14. At the start of the 4th quarter Whitesboro scores to make the score 32-14 and then we score on a long pass to Dakota Cherrier across the middle to make the score 32-22. Whitesboro scores at the very end to make the game 38-22. Overall, the boys fought hard all night, but came up short. The players of the game were Dakota Cherrier with two touchdowns, Cooper Reynolds with two passing touchdowns, and Mitchell Nuziard. Defensive players of the game were Colin Ussery and Hayden Bradshaw.

The Freshman Team played Sanger and put up a good fight, but also fell short in a close one, 34-26.

Coach Westbrook’s comments on the game:

The Ponder Lions freshmen football team travelled to Sanger on Thursday, September, 23 rd to take on the Sanger Indians. The Lions played a hard fought game that began with the Indians up 22-20 at the end of the first half. In the second half, both defenses tightened down. The Lions were able to make a few last pushes to score but in the end, the Indians defense held strong, ending the game with a score of 34-26. The Lions were led offensively by Jimmy Camacho, Clayton Cooper, Johnny Arrellano, and Ashtyn Castillo. Defensively, the Lions were led by Steven Pile, Blaine Turner, and Kale Jones. The Lions are now 3-2 on the season and will look to add their fourth victory to the record board when they host Krum on Thursday, September 30th.
