Quarantines, runs on toilet paper and hand sanitizer, and face masks filled the spring of PHS Class of 2020. But COVID-19 met its match when it tried to stop their graduation! This class rallied and made the best of a strange situation. Denton County moved all graduations that would have been held at UNT to Texas Motor Speedway, the PHS Class of 2020 just “sped” along to the finish line, diplomas in hand. A nice surprise for them was a message from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, along with some local celebrities like Justin Jackson from the Mavericks, Andy Dalton and Jaylon Smith of the Dallas Cowboys, and a few others.
All of the speakers were pre-recorded in order to keep things flowing and on time. Emily Garite began the ceremony with benediction followed by PHS salutatorian Jace Hutcherson. Jace reminded the class of their good times through the years and thanked his God, family, friends, and teachers for their support throughout the years. Next up were scholarships that were received by the graduates, and the numbers were staggering. Needless to say, this is a very talented class!
The valedictory speech was given by Reese Arterberry. Reese also recalled some special times, special teachers, and thanked his family, friends, and others who have supported him on his journey. His message to his classmates was that they are a class of champions and to remember that as they travel on this next journey. Following Reese was the moment all were waiting for- diplomas! As each student was called, they walked past the finish line, diploma in hand and on to photo time. Once everyone was finished, it was time to certify that they all had graduated, change the tassels, and then tossing the mortarboards into the air.
This may not have been the graduation or last nine weeks they had envisioned, but the Class of 2020 is on its way to bigger and better things! What a memorable time this has been, and what a great way to celebrate them as champions than at TMS.
Congratulations Class of 2020! We will miss you!
