If you’ve recently come up to Ponder High School early in the morning, you may have noticed a new voice shouting commands at our hard-working marching band. That voice belongs to Mr. Kurt Shafer, our new band director, coming to us from Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas where he was the assistant band director. Mr. Shafer brings with him 14 total years of teaching experience; eight years teaching at the college level, and six years in public education. His wife Ann is an elementary school teacher, and they have two children, Jackson and Avery, ages five and two. When asked, Mr. Shafer said his favorite thing about his job is teaching students how to play music, and he is psyched to lead the Ponder music program to new heights! He doesn’t have any special superpowers, but he does have extraordinary patience, which is great news for our band kids! The quote that most accurately sums up his personality is, “Do or do not, there is not try.” Be sure to go meet Mr. Shafer, and make him feel welcome here at Ponder High School.
